Dear Parents/caregivers,

  • Please ensure homework folders come to school every day
  • Homework folders will remain at school on the weekend.  This allows home readers to be changed on Fridays.

Weekly homework tasks:

  • Home readers x 2
  • Practice sight words
  • Practice spelling words
  • Homework activity grid (only if finished all sight words)

Home readers

When your child is tested on their reading they are required to read, retell the story (in sequence) and answer literal and inferential questions.

Beneficial structure to follow to assist your child

 1st night - read book 1

2nd night - children to retell story from book 1.  Ask literal and inferential questions about the story.

3rd night - read book 2

4th night - children to retell story from book 2.  Ask literal and inferential questions about the story.

Sight words

Sight word fluency is important for beginning readers.  As children begin to recognise these words instead of sounding them out, the speed of their reading improves, allowing them to focus on comprehending the text.  Please practice and revisit these high frequency words with your child.

Sight words will be tested at school only.  Please do not highlight/mark/underline sight word booklets.

Spelling words

Students have 10 spelling words to learn each week.  Spelling tests will be on Fridays.  Please decide on what learning style works for your child.  Some suggestions (but not limited to):

  • Rainbow words
  • Playdough words
  • Sentences
  • Water painting
  • Rice words
